Computer Use

Guidelines for Use of the Computers

Monday, Thursdays, Fridays: Library closes at 5 p.m. Computers are shut down at 4:50 p.m.- last sign up is 4:20 p.m.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays: Library closes at 7 p.m. Computers are shut down at 6:50 p.m.- last sign up is 6:20 p.m.
Saturdays: Library closes at 4 p.m. Computers are shut down at 3:50 p.m.- last sign up is 3:20 p.m. NOTE: HPL IS NOT CURRENTLY OPEN ON SATURDAYS

  1. Computers are available for use at no charge on a first-com-first-serve basis.
  2. Users must have basic knowledge of PC equipment and of software applications. Instruction is not available.
  3. All users must sign in and sign out with the  Security Officer/Circulation Desk.
  4. Adults and students in Grade 9 and above may use the computers located in the Adult Services Department.
  5. Students (in grade 8 and below) must use the computers in the Children’s Department. NOTE: CHILDREN’S ROOM IS NOT CURRENTLY OPEN
  6. Children ages 6 and under must be supervised by a responsible adult while using the computers.
  7. (NOTE: CURRENT MAXIMUM COMPUTER TIME IS 30 MINUTES) Users may sign in for a maximum of 2 hours per day in 30 minute increments. If other people are waiting to sign in for the computers, a user must stop at the end  of the current 30 minute session. The balance of the 2 hour daily time limit may be used when no people are waiting to use the computers.
  8. No non-library provided software is to be installed on any Hyannis Public Library computer.
  9. Printing is in black and white only, your paper or ours, and you will be charged for every page that you print. If you do not know how to print, ask a staff person to help you.

The following is prohibited:

  1. Turn the computer on or off. A library staff person will do this.
  2. Bring food or drink into the computer area.
  3. Use cell phones in the library. Cell phones should be turned off.
  4. Use any Hyannis Public Library computers to “crack” or “hack” (gain unauthorized access to) any computer systems.
  5. Obstruct another user’s work by consuming large amounts of system resources (disc space, CPU time) or by deliberately crashing any Hyannis Public Library computers.
  6. Attempt to read another person’s files.
  7. Illegally distribute software (“pirating”) and violate copy laws.
  8. Install software of any kind on any Hyannis Public Library Computer.
  9. Transmit threatening, obscene, or harassing materials.
  10. Knowingly transmit any computer virus.
  11. Deliberately display obscene materials. (MGL, Chapter 271, 29 and MGL Chapter 272, 311)*

Wireless Networking

You are welcome to browse the internet using your own wireless (WiFi) enabled laptop computer or mobile device. This access is provided free.

Limitations and Disclaimers:

  • Printing is not available using the Library’s wireless network; you can access a printer by using one of the public computers.
  • The Library’s wireless network is not secure with WEP. Information sent from or to your laptop can be captured by anyone else with a wireless device and the appropriate software within three hundred feet. Do not enable file sharing or printer sharing. If you do so, other people may gain access to your hard drive and files or misuse your computer. Do not do any online banking or other transactions where your personal information is required.
  • It is also highly recommended that your laptop have up-to-date anti-virus software installed and working before going online.
  • Library staff is not able to provide technical assistance and no guarantee can be provided that you will be able to make a wireless connection.
  • The Library assumes no responsibility for the safety of equipment or for laptop configurations, security, or data files resulting from trying to connect to the Library’s network.
  • Illegal or inappropriate use of the Internet is not permitted. If inappropriate images are displayed in view of others in the library, the offending party will be asked to leave the building.
